Restoring the Rose Window: A Journey of Light and Renewal

Writer: Rudi MaritzRudi Maritz

Since the removal of Holy Trinity’s iconic Rose Window on 16 January 2025, we have been following its restoration with great anticipation. This beautiful window, a centrepiece of our church’s spiritual and architectural heritage, is currently undergoing an intricate process of renewal at Art Glass Studio in Pretoria. The progress so far has been remarkable, bringing us closer to seeing this masterpiece returned to its rightful place.

A Glimpse into the Restoration Process

Yesterday, Fr. Russell visited the Art Glass studio to check in on the restoration and shared this update:

"The work on the window is progressing well and is on track. The huge Rose Window is in pieces, and one cannot believe that those little pieces make up the beauty we see at the back of the church.
The windows are dismantled, cleaned, fixed, and then re-leaded and assembled. Some of the smaller windows are already reassembled. We are sending some pictures so that you can see the work that is being done."

This meticulous process ensures that every fragment of the stained glass is preserved and strengthened, allowing it to shine for generations to come. It is a delicate balance of tradition and craftsmanship, with skilled artisans carefully restoring each section of the window.

The Beauty Behind the Work

Seeing the window disassembled into countless pieces is a humbling reminder of how each element contributes to the breathtaking whole. This restoration is not just about repairing glass—it’s about preserving the faith, history, and beauty that this window represents. It is a testament to the dedication of our church community and all those who have contributed to making this project a reality.
